Basically I've found disabling the office plugin helps, but Norton itself will still be slow. It should finish though.
As for Spybot, I've found it tends to hang if you download from the default server, in Europe. After you hit, check for updates, change the server to the one in the US.
and manually download the spybot and norton antivirus definitions updates, then boot to safe mode, and run full scans of both. Clean anything found, reboot and try again.
Let me know if you're still having problems after this.
On a hunch I disabled Norton for awhile and was able to update Norton, Ad-aware and Spybot. Unfortunetly Norton seems to have forgotten that I just extended my subscription for a year.
