Nortel 350-T Switch & Bay 250 Series Hubs

I have been having a tough time getting optimal speed/response time on a couple of my networks here. On my networks, i use Nortel(bay) 350 24 T switches, and bay 255 autosense hubs. I am, however noticing a lag in response time and a noticeable drop in the speed of file transfers. It appears that the problem only occurs when I use the hubs... When i plug my ftp server directly into the switch and plug a laptop on the switch also... my transfer rate is fine, but when I plug them into the hub there is a noticeable lag and drop in the transfer rate. I initially thought that it was the autosense hubs that was causing slow down so i purchased a bay 253 managed hub, cascaded the hubs together, consoled into the managed hub and forced all the port speeds to 100Meg full duplex. I also disabled autonegotiate on the switch and set the port speed to 100Meg full, but I have not had any success. I was thinking that maybe it could be an issue with the firmware version on the switch and the hubs but I don't know. Has anybody out there had a similar problem... how did you handle it? We had the same problem. All we did was set our ports to Half duplex and lived with it.
My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.
