normal.dot default template

My Word programme open with an existing document by default, how do I change this back to Normal.dot.

Check your Startup folder. If Word has a file there, it will open it on startup.

Check the folder where the standard 'normal.dot' template is located, if your using W2K/XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

If it is still there but has been altered you'll need to create a new template, saving it with a different name to normal.dot, then change the name of the incorrect file and finally rename your new template 'normal.dot'.
