When setting up a non-invetory item or miscellaneous item, do I have to preceed the item with a / if so, what is the purpose of this?

No you don't put the / when setting it up, you just use it when putting the item into SO entry.

The purpose of the "/" is to let the system know that what you are about to enter is a misc. item or charge. If you did not use the "/" and just entered the misc. item or charge the system would think it was an inventory item and would search the inventory files.
