Non Blocking IO's

Now I know I am very very a beginner to Java since I am a Visual Basic programmer but I have this little question (hoping it is little)

We are outsourcing a project that needs to be written in Java and the dude is doing all of the backend and half of the front end, so he says that he is leaving the easy stuff for me.
Now he says that I will need to know something about non blocking IO's and Message switching to get through this.
First of all what are they?
then where would you go to get up to speed on this?

What he is really saying is that he wants you to know about NIO, which was just added in J2SE 1.4. Check out this article:

http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/releases/nio/

and then start browsing the API.

Don't worry, you'll do fine. Of course, I don't really know that you'll be fine... I'm just trying to be encouraging
