Hello all,

Need help.

This computer was shut down incorrectly. When restarted it did the usual Scan Disk then no working mouse. These people did not know how to fix it so it has been off for about four months. The computer is not used on the Net. No viruses. No new programs or hardware.

So now they turned this over for me to fix.

I started the computer the Active Desktop warning screen pops-up. Could not get out of it because the mouse does not work.

In Safe Mode no Active Desktop screen and the mouse works. In Device Manager no conflicts. I tried to update the driver it says it has the best driver for the device. I shut down the computer and disconnected the mouse. Restarted and then shut down again. Plugged the mouse back in to see if I could force the driver to update. Did not work and the Active Desktop screen still appears.

I started again in Safe Mode and checked to see if I could do a System Restore. After being off for four months who knew. Well I restored it back to May. Now the computer starts fine but still no mouse.

Now I can get into Device Manager using the key board. There is a problem with the mouse. That's as far as I can go. I can't get in and see what's wrong because I can't click on the tabs.

I go into Control Panel>Add Hardware. The wizard finds the mouse but I can't high lite it in the list so I can't finish. Does anyone know what keys I can use to high lite the mouse in the list? Or another way I can update the driver. I tried the arrow keys but it only bring me back and fort through the wizard. I tried the Enter key it brings me back to the list. Or should I just do a repair of the OS with the ME installation disk?

If I have to wipe it out (I really don't wan't to to do that)I might downgrade to 98se. Computers to old for XP.

Note: They have no Restoration disks. Compaq 7000.

Thanks spool

Go to safe mode, device manager. Expand the section under mouse, remove all entries there. Reboot and try again.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You have tried another PS2 (or is it serial?) mouse? Or a usb mouse if its got USB? Windows doesn't need a driver installing for a mouse - so can't see how installing a driver will help. Is it possible the connector is slightly damaged?

In normal mode, device manager - no exclamation marks next to any hardware? If mouse works in safe mode, that suggests to me that there's a conflict with another device in normal mode.

Thanks all for the info.

I tried another mouse same problem. In normal mode the mouse does have an exclamation mark. I can't click on it so I can't see what is causing the problem. IRQ? I think I can get this fixed if I could find the right key combinations so I can highlight the mouse in the box. Then the Add Hardware wizard could finish/repair.

Note: When I got the computer the mouse was plugged into the keyboard port. The keyboard is using USB. Costumer knows noting about computers.

Thanks, spool

Update:

The vmouse.vxd was not loading at startup.

For anyone who has this problem in the future Microsoft KB article.
