I have Win 2000 Pro all SP's. I ran updates, rebooted no issues. Created ERD, shut down. Installed SATA drive, Seagate 80 GB. Started machine. No issues, went Windows with no problems. Verified new drive and begin to work. Worked all night able to write to new drive. Shut down for the evening. Started this morning. Goes through to Black screen Starting Windows - F8 for Safe Mode, then on to blue screen where you would normally see dialog boxes stating that profile is being loaded, and settings applied. However now these boxes do not appear, and the machine turns the monitor off, and a second later reboots. This is a continious cycle. Popped in the Windows Disk and rebooted. Windows Setup to repair, using ERD previously created. SATA drive is unplugged at this point. ERD was made before SATA install. Windows goes through repair, and asks to reboot. Do so, but back to the same cycle of Windows never fully loading, even in Safe Mode it cycles and restarts at the same point. Any idea why this may be occuring? Any idea on how to get machine back without having to reinstall? Any idea on how once machine is back that I can install SATA without issues? This has occured before and I had to reformat and reinstall Windows for it be fixed. I am using a ULI mobo with AMD Clawhammer processor and 1GB RAM. Thanks in advance.

i have this problem with our Dell workstation running on SATA drives. This is what i do for my dell.

go to BIOS, choose "Drives" then "SATA Operation" you will have 4 operation method.

1. RAID Autodetect/AHCL
2. RAID Autodetect/ATA
3. RaID on
4. Combination

the default for my dell was combination, so i switch back to RAID Autodetect/ATA mode

hope that helps

RMCP2K, thanks for the reply. However my machine is still on the fritz.
My BIOS on my ULI M1689 board is set to auto. The OS is located on a Seagate 20GB HDD. System was fine till the install of the SATA, even after removal of the SATA the system will not boot. I figured the removal of the SATA HDD would resolve the issue using an ERD to revert back to the OS before the install. This was not the case. Even attempted to use "last known good configuration" in the Safe Mode load, to no avail.
