no sound

I have a sound issue with my computer. I took it to a technician to fix it and I gave him my speakers that I use at home. He called and said that there was no problem with the speakers. So I went to get the PC and he showed me that the sound works with my own speakers when I got there. When I took it home and hooked everything up I had no sound. I have a pentium 2 450MHz. Processor with 128Mb RAM. With Windows 98SE. The power cord for the speakers was tested at the shop with my speakers. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

If I read your post correctly, it was your PC that the speakers were tested on in the shop and not a different one.

If it was yours, it's got to be one of those Homer Simpson "DOH!" type problems...something obvious that's staring you in the face. Check the cables again to make sure they're plugged into the correct jacks on both ends. Also make sure there's power on the AC outlet the power supply is plugged into. Make sure the volume knob isn't turned down. I know, this is elementary stuff, but if it worked in the shop, it's got to be something pretty simple.

If they weren't tested on your PC at the shop, there's a BUNCH of things that could be wrong.

The speakers were tested at the shop on my computer and I checked everything you mentioned and everyhting seems to be in the right place. Do you think it could be the electrical output in my house?

check the volume icon in the systray. make sure the volume is turned up in there.

This may seem redundent, but check the speakers again. There may be TWO places to plug the speakers in - the audio port and the modem port. Are these powered speakers (cord from computer to an amp built into the speaker case)? If you only have one port: with the system on, take the speaker plug out and "scrape" it along a bare spot on the computer case (you won't hurt anything or get shocked). You should hear static sound from the speakers. If not, you have no power to the amplifier, or the cord from the computer to the amp is shorted. Do the speakers have a manual volume control? I have a set of nice JBL amplified speakers that are controled only by the icon on the desktop.

To better isolate the source of the problem try plugging the audio input jack from the speakers into the earphone jack of something else, like a transistor radio, to see if you get any sound.

Sound = Problem is in the computer.
No sound = Problem is in the speakers.

The following is a list of things I have checked on the speakers and on the computer.
the sound in the computer is up all the way
there is a small speaker icon in the lower right corner so I know the sound is installed
The speakers are plugged into the audio out jack
the speakers are turned all the way up
the speakers did work when they were plugged into the computer at the computer shop. I saw this mayself.
At my house they dont work. The speakers were my speakers and they were tested on my computer.
I tried a different power outlet in my house.
I treid plugging into all the audio jacks, just in case they were labeled wrong.
I bought new speakers last night and they do the same thing.
Would other peripherals plugged into my PC cause this problem?

a couple of immediate thoughts, 1st if you go into windows in safe Mode does the device manager have any X's or problems with any of the devices or Duplicate Devices, 2nd On the Modem, is there any kind of other plug that the speaker would plug into ? as Certain brands of internal Modems have Tie ins to the sound card, so you don't actually plug it into the audio out jack (this would be evident by looking at the modem card & sound card) the Modem Slot would have the phone plug but it would also have one or two spots for the speaker/microphone,

Control Panel >> Multimedia >> Audio Tab
-- tick "Use only preferred devices"
-- Make sure your Sound Card appears in Drop Down Box, in "Playback" preferred devices - not voice modem or anything else.
-- Advanced Button >> Speakers drop down = Desktop stereo spkrs...is that what they are?

What Media player are you trying to play audio from?

I checked the thigs that tektippy4u mentioned. The speakers are desktop stereo speakers and they are set as the way you mentioned. Also those other setting are set to the sound card. I am using windows media player. Mt modem does not have an audio jack on it

Go to the control panel and bring up the sound application. Try assigning a new sound to an event, preferably a large WAV file that takes at least a couple of seconds to play thru. Does it act like it's playing a sound?

WMP? - what version?
when at techie's, didn't you ask what he did to make it work?
when it worked at techs, was it an Audio Music CD that was played?

list all the peripheral devices you have hooked up
Printer
USB devices
Zip drives
all the junk, besides Keyboard, Monitor, and Mouse - btw is this a Laptop? do you have a Multi-function Keyboard with a Mute button?
be very specific and much info for more help.

Start > Run DXDIAG
walk through all the tests

post important results

there's something missing that's extremely obvious that you're not telling us...Also look in Device Manager in Safe Mode as macphoneguy suggested.

I can only add this:

You said you checked the connections, but did you check the wires them selves?

My sister's protable CD player end up not working cause she kept pulling at the wire shething instead of the at the prongs.

Also, you may want to giggle the jack to make sure it's the right size connection and not too loose.
