No sorting required on subform

I have a Access XP (2000 format) DB with a FE and BE.

I have an invoice form which has a subform (for detail records), and I noticed when the user enters a record only with a description (in the description field) such as "*** certificate ***" it would then move this to a different line in the subform.

The user requires this line to be exactly where he placed it.

I checked the "order by" property of the subform and it is blank. I also checked the underlying table and the only thing that I think could cause this is the index on the invoice number field (which by default is set to ascending sequence).

This field is used in a relationship with the main table. Do I require a index on this field and will it ignore the sorting if I remove the index?

Any suggestions appreciated.

hey there--
don't really get what you mean "it would then move this to a different line in the subform." how is it moving it? is it sorting 'DESC' ascending or something?

what are you using in the subform/subtable as an index? i don't mean to relate to main table, but in subform/detail record table do you have another index that is autonum just in that table? if not then having this will keep records in subform as they are entered.

is this what you mean?

Hi, all I need is that when the user inserts the detail records for that specific invoice, that the table, report and any queries display the info the same sequence as they were entered. The sorting on the main form/record is sorted by invoice number, but the subrecords must not be sorted by access.

Is there a solution? Maybe a step-by-step procedure I can follow to eliminate the sort.

Thanks. "All is not as it seems"

Till you don't give Access a way to order your records, the result will be NEAR to chronological order, but ONLY near.

When you want to rule the order you have to add a field usable to sort your records(i.e. with an AutoNum field as GingerR suggested you) and use is to OrderBy your subform.

I'm afraid that out of that you'll be disappointed sooner or later.
