I have a huge problem, my pdc went down, had to buy a new server. Configured the new domain. BDC cannot join the new domain. When I try to join the new domain it tells me that the domain cannot be found. I can ping the server by ip and by name. From The BDC I can see the new domain and all the computers, I can access all of the computers, but from all the other worksatations or servers I cannot access the BDC. It Says "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."
I know that the easiest thing would be to upgrade the NT 4.0 BDC to 2000 or 2003 But here is the problem. It has an old ERP system installed (that was installed before I came into the picture) cannot upgrade because the software is absolete and cannot be reinstalled. HELP PLEASE!!

P.S.
I was thinking in maybe demoting the BDC would that work?

hi edgarv,

if i recall correctly, you cannot move a bdc from one domain to another - something to do with the BDC sharing a common SID with the PDC. You have to completely rebuild it in order to move it to another domain.

What you could have done was to promote the BDC to PDC, then rebuild the old PDC to act as a BDC in the original domain. That way this would have less of an impact on you - as you wouldn't have had to move the workstations from one domain to another.

hope this helps.

Sorry forgot to mention,

there are 3rd party software out there that might be able to help move a BDC to a different domain, such as UPromote - but i personally haven't used them.

all the best

Thank you chronos1,
I was that is the software I was thinking about (UPromote).
Well I went ahead and bought a lic for my server, demoted it and everything is now working very well. Thanks.

Could have easily promote the BDC into primary, then build the new server to join in this BDC. Afterward, promote the new server into primary. Why create the new domain? why why why?
