My databases are being transitioned to a data center in anotehr state, and I was just informed that Outlook will not be installed on any servers. I have aksed the DBA Team how they will monitor jobs and they referenced a third party product. Which is fine, however, I have email alerts for users on Job Completion via SQL Mail through MS Outlook. What options do I have? Create an SP that uses SMTP Mail with the CDO Library, and add a step to the jobs? Any other options?

Frankly, I would tell them that they have to convert your jobs to send you the alerts you need.

You could write an active_x task and add it to the job as a step or you could write an extended stored proc to do them same thing and addit to the job. Or what you said.

Thanks, but... purchasing and getting the DBA team to approve installation, could be a problem.

I still say, they are breaking your system, it's up to them to come up with the fix. Make sure that your boss is aware of the issue as well. Ask him or her to escalate the issue to their boss to get them to fix the problem they created.

Cant you use Profman? No need for outlook

You setup the mapi info, then connect to it using the SQL Mail Agent. (sql services need to be started under domain accounts)

I have never had outlook on servers. Not good practice, especially on 2003 server boxes

If you have an off version of mapi32.dll, you will not have the option under agent properties(grayed out), then you need SQL 2000 SP4.

If you have SQL 2k5, then use database mail instead.
Hopefully we can all use smtp instead of mapi real soon.

Thanks, I will investigate the mapi32.dll option...
