no outbound connections for mail essentials

We are running an older version of mail essentials V5. Internal mail is still working properly but no incomeing external mail is being sent from the server once it is scanned. The outbound folder just keeps filling up. Any help on this would be greatly helpful. I called GFI and they had no idea what the problem was.
