Hello guys! When I try to boot from the hard drive it says "no operating system found" but when I boot from a floppy, I can do a dir c: and see everything on the C drive. I tried replacing the master boot record using fdisk /mbr. I was able to successfully run scan desk on it. Thank you for any advice you have!

Boot from your Boot Disk and select boot with CDRom support. Place your windows disc in the cd rom and`go to "C" and type setup and hpefully reinstall Windows or at least repair what is already in there.

Have you recently made an image of this drive, (cloned this drive onto another?) If so, some disk imaging software will "HIDE" the partition and you will not be able to boot off of it. If this is the case, make two boot disks of partition magic and boot off of these floppies. They will give you the option to unhide the partition, and then you will be able to boot off of it. Just a thought, hope it helps.

Snowgirl,

Sounds like you may have lost the win98 boot sector.
Boot from a win98 boot floppy, and firstly check if the boot sector files are there. Run attrib *.* -S -H -R at the C:\> prompt (root of C:). The files to look for are io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com. If msdos.sys is there, back it up by copy it elsewhere (eg C:\windows\temp). Then from the A: prompt run sys C:. Reboot to hard drive. Hopefully, windows will boot. If it boots to a dos prompt, copy the saved msdos.sys back to the root of C: and try again. If there was no msdos.sys, you can create one by copy/pasting the entries below into notepad, and saving file as msdos.sys (you want type to be all files, not text in this case):

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootMulti=1
Logo=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.2222
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
