No menus in Word

I have Word 2000 which has all the functions (I think)running OK - except there are no menus or Alt-N tools visible. I can access the Cntrl-N through the keyboard, but not the Alt-N.
I need to do some tricky insertions of pictures and don't think I can do it without those tools.
