I have a server which normally resides in an office on a domain.

I have a remote location with a server which does not belong to a domain.

I physically take the office server to the remote location to run a job, which involves copying files from the office server to the other server. The 2 machines are networked together on a hub.
When i try to access the share on the remote server, I get an error box with message:
"There are currently no logon servers available to service the login request".

I gather this is something to do with the office server wanting a domain controller to tell it what to do.

Is there a way to bypass this requirement?

(Strangely, the remote server can connect to the office machine without being prompted for any login information)

While the remote server is not on the domain, you will have to deal with permissions in a workgroup environment. Also, you may have routing issues as you probably have fixed IP addresses on the servers and they may not be on the same subnet (You should be using fixed IP addresses for your servers).

First, make sure the servers can ping each other to clear up any network connectivity.

Second, try enabling the guest account on the remote server and give it NTFS and share permissions. This should allow your office server to get through the security of group membership to access the remote.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

Here is a novel idea, don't physically move a server!

Keep the server where it is and either backup and restore the data or establish a VPN connection over the Internet to be able to copy the data.

Thanks for the replys.

IP has been configured. I have shared folder on remote machine (everyone and guest - all ticked, security .
The problem is that the office machine does not prompt with login box or anything - you just get the error.

Novel idea, but no good. Machine has to be physically moved.
Anyway, even if i setup the VPN connection, i would still have to get through the security to move files, so i would be no better off.

Any other suggestions?

What security can't you get through via VPN that you can with physical access? It should be the same thing. Establishing a VPN between the servers puts them on the same network.

Yes - my point exactly.
Read the original post - i am having problems with windows security.

If you leave the server in place it will still have access to the DC. Second the VPN will allow you to log inot the server with domain credentials making the need for the guest account non existent.

Right - see your original point now.

Unfortunately the server has to be moved, so the original problem needs to be resolved.

Then you may want to add a DC at the other location.

:``(

I can not believe the MS security is so good the only way is to take 2 machines with me.
There's got to be a work-around?

SD

The problem is not with MS security but the design of your architecture.

I hope you find this post helpful.
