Im trying to login to a Cisco 1841 router via a console cable and when i connect i type Login , then the error in subject appears.

When i type enable, i enter the password im 99% sure it is, but im not sure what default username its using and it doesnt let me authenticate.

Any help would be great. thanks

You could always do a password recovery, then look at sh run...it sounds like it is set to authenticate to a RADIUS server, with an AAA config...

Thanks for the quick reply, sounds to you like im entering the wrong password?

Pretty interesting that it doesnt give me an option to enter in a different user account to authenticate to..

thanks

It depends on the config. I would do a password recovery (if you are allowed to) and see what the config says.
Why would you type "login"? That will prompt for a RADIUS/TACACS+ server. What does the promt say when you console in and just hit enter?

It comes up with a router> prompt. I can type in show commands and a bunch of others, but enable prompts for password , and doesnt let me type in a user name...

well.. you won't type in a user name for enable mode, it just requires the enable password.

Usually the only time you will use the username/password combo is if you are trying to authenticate via RADIUS/TACACS+ when you attempt to telnet/ssh to the device.

I thought Cisco boxes could have different user accounts and you could authenticate to enable privileged mode with a different account, but it appears i was wrong. ( it has happened before :) )

It looks like I have to guess the password or use a cisco doc i have to reset the password on the box.

thanks!

Resetting the password is very easy. Also, you can set different usernames and privilege levels---yours does not seem to be that way---it would prommpt for

If you are getting router> do the following ....

router>
router>enable
password: *enter password here*

If you aren't sure of the password you may want to try "cisco" or even press enter to see if its blank.
