no interfaces up under solaris 8 1

hi, I have a little problem with solaris 8 platform. After instalation, there are no interfaces up. So I cannot configure the network. What can I do? How can I make interfaces???

Ok, I tried to use the ifconfig command, but it gives back that there is invalid file name.
e.g
ifconfig hme0 plumb

gives back invalid file name.
How can I know what name should I give??

Hi.

ifconfig -a should tell you the interfaces the system knows about. Have you tried a reconfigure boot (ie boot -r from the OK prompt or createe an empty file called reconfigure in the root directory and shutdown -i6 -g0 -y to reboot).

as huebs writes, we need to know the hardwareplatform and the interfacetype to help you; if you don't know run "sys-unconfig" to unconfigure all settings of this host (man sys-unconfig for more info) and boot the host. It will ask you which interface to use...
if the interfaces are pluped but not set "UP,RUNNING" ifconfig -a will help you

ok, ifconfig -a gives me back:
lo0: FLAGS = 1000849 (up, loopback,running, multicast, ipv4) mtu 8232 index 1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000

I cannot plumb any other interfaces 'cause i don't know what name should i use.

My hardware:

x86 family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6
AT/AT Compatibile
260 330 KB RAM

VGA: Intel Corporation 810 Graphics Controller Hub

NC: 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet ( 3C905C - TX Compatibile)

Your 3Com should be elxl0 ("ifconfig elxl0 plumb").

ok, I've just try to reconficure. I used sys-unconfig
but i didn't have an opportunity to choose the interface. There are still no interfaces up. Afer typing ifconfig -a the result is the same as above. And additionaly the hostname now is "unknown" and in hosts I have only:
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost

I've just tried ifconfig elxl0 plumb but unfortunatelly it gives back : ifconfig : plumb: elxl0: Bad file number.....

Hmm. Some morer Googling seems to suggest that you may need to install patch #109866-03 to get this working. I've not checked, but it should be available from

sorry doti I thought it is Sparc hardware. I'm not sure wether sys0unconfig and booting it works on x86 as on Sparc...

BTW: I suggest to install Recommened Patchcluster before trying anything else...

I've read the info on the forum mentioned by KenCunningham, but my problem is a bit diffrent because i dont even have the the hostname file (e.g hostname.elxl0) in the etc ditectory.

I think the idea is to create it if it isn't there. Also, as suggested, apply whatever patches might be needed.

It's usual to put the patch image in /var/spool/pkg (though this is not compulsory and can be overridden with the -d option), and use pkgadd to install it from there.

First of all, I'm really greatful that you are helping me....

I downloaded the patch mentioned above. It's a folder that contains other files amd folders. And now i'd like to burn it on the cd to be able, later on, to install it under the solaris.

KenCunningham, you have written that i have to put patch image into /var/spool/pkg directory. Does it mean that i have to create the image of the folder that i downloded and then burn it on the cd, or can i just burn the folder i downloded and then copy it to the mentioned directory????

hello again,

I have succesfully install that patch. Now, i could easily find my driver in the /boot/solaris/devicedb/master file.
Unfortunately i still couldn't plumb the elxl0 interface.
So, I created the hostname.elxl0 file with my ip address as an entry. Then i've put the entry to the netmask file /etc/netmasks. I've also added to the /etc/hosts the entry with my hostname and ip address.
Unfortunately aftr doing all this i still cannot plumb interface. There is a message: ifconfig: plumb: elxl0: Bad file number

P.S Sorry for the second thread, it was at the very beginning, and made by mistake.
