I have 3 completely isolated PCs that aquired this fault after reinstalling w98 on top.

When w98 starts up it does not give the logon screen, if you logoff, then you get the box.

I found nothing in the registry, kb, technet or internet articles.

I think it is probably a regisry entry.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Pritch.

Agree. How about deleting the network adapter and then reinstalling the network. Suspect that it won't deinstall correctly. And was the original install made with the NIC in place , or was it added after the install? Ed Fair

Hey.
Thanks Edfair for replying.
I have removed all networking components. And set it up again. problem remains. I did that on the first PC and the last but not on the second as the user needed her laptop back, and was happy to put up with it.

You may be onto something with the other point about the original installation. I don't know about the first PC but the laptop and yesterdays occurance more than likely were built before the NIC. I say that because we buy the PC card NICs for the laptop separately, and all the ones ive done were already setup. And the PC yesterday, had an onboard NIC disabled, and two definitions in the network settings.

Use the MSDUN 1.3 updater to update the IP stack. It also puts Dial Up Adapter in there too, but you can take it out later.

It cured my same problem.

My next step would be to remove the NICs and edit the registry to remove any references remaining to anything remotely resembling NIC. But then again, I'm into S&M. Editing the registry is the easiest way I know to munge a system.
You probably need to remove DUN also.
Then reinstall and see if it has resolved. Ed Fair

What network are you trying to connect to NT, novell or other?

Hey
Well, it seems I've got some fodder!
Thanks, I'll let you know how I get on.

The problem was sorted in the end with the registry hack courtesy of BLokie.
Thanks for all your replies. (especially BLokie).
