No Hard Drive Space Gained after Deleting Large Mailboxes...

I deleted 10 huge mailboxes of users that are no longer here during "spring cleaning". When I did this I assumed the space on the Hard Drive would change. It did not. Since hard drive space is limited on this server and it has to last until the new server is shipped in I was wondering is there a way to free up the space in limbo??

Thanks,

unfortunately, that "space" will not be given back to you until you perform an OFFLINE defrag. In the meantime, exchange will just use that space first instead of growing any further, so you shouldn't see any increases for a while....

If you sent those deleted mail files to the wastebasket, they still reside on your drive. Try emptying the wastebasket, selectively if you like, and you'll free up that space.

No you won't Ace.

It doesn't matter how many emails, mailboxes or folders you delete in Exchange, the priv.edb file does not shrink.

To shrink it you need to stop the services, go to command prompt and run eseutil /d (read up on the options before you do it!).

To get an idea of how much space you'll reclaim go to event viewer and look in application for 1221 event ID. That's your on line defrag that should tell you how much free space is in the database. Make sure you are looking at the priv.edb event not the pub.edb or you'll be misled!!!
