I can't get any audio from either of my DVD drives. All other audio sources work normally. I've checked the mixer and audio settings and all indications are that it should work.
.avi's work normal as do all other audio and video inputs, just DVD audio is silent.

TIA

I would check in your DVD player software setup. Remember that on a DVD that the audio and video is interleaved (mixed together), so the audio isn't going to be coming out of a physical port of the DVD player (like the old audio CD's did), instead it's going to be processed at the same time it's decoding the video.

If you can see the video, it's got to be a setting in your player that's not allowing you to hear it.

Tried a new cable, no joy.

Both DVD drives have no audio. One with the cable and one without. I am using Media Player for playback and a Mad Dog 4.1 sound card that works fine for all other audio inputs. Could it be a codec??? I don't currently have any other DVD playback software on the 'puter. The DVD in question plays back fine on other 'puters or DVD players.

At one time both drives would play a DVD just fine. It's been a long time since I tried to play a DVD in the 'puter so when I lost the audio output is a mystery. I looked at a system restore but since I can't tell when I developed this problem, I'm not sure this is a good option.

Check or replace the audio cable that goes from the DVD drive to the sound card or motherboard.

Not to be rude, but did you READ THIS?

"Tried a new cable, no joy."

Yes, this is the cable from the player to the sound card.

I have looked at all the settings in Media Player and can't see anything any different in the affected computer from one that plays audio.

starting with W2k, AUDIO Cables are no longer needed... Audio is transfered DIGITALLY over the IDE CABLE... but this applies only to AUDIO CD's and DVD's, ie. CDDA data structure...

I suggest that you:
a.) reinstall the DVD Player software,
b.) update that software,
or
c.) install a CODEC Pack (ie. )...

Audio on DVD's are usually encoded with the AC3 standard, similar to MP3, it needs to have the correct codec installed for playback, otherwise NO sound...

Hope this helps...

My suggestion is to check the drive's firmware too, make sure it is the latest. Then I would install another DVD playing program, such as WinDVD, or look for a player that offers a free trial like
Please note I have no personal knowledge of this player(quick search result).

Re-installation of your current player may keep your old settings, even if un-installed, not likely but possible.

Good luck.

Thanks all.

I sort of figured the cable wasn't the problem but it was worth a try.

I'll try a different DVD player software and see what happens.
