Hello,
I have the following problem:
In a small network of 29 clients and one server with Small Buisiness Server 2000 with sp1a, when a client is trying to save in a network share (on the server) the following message appears:

"No disk space or memory is full". There is a slight variation to the message and sometimes retry appears or ok. If you press retry a couple of times then you can save. (Actually the files have been saved and the error message is mistaken, but I haven't confirmed that 100%)

It happens pretty often and in random clients when trying to save from word, excel, outlook etc. Most clients have office 2000 with sp1 or sp3 and few have office Xp.

About a month ago we changed the server we had. It was NT server sp4a. We never experienced such a problem. I set the new server (new box) with small buisiness server
2000 (sql server was installed later, exchange server is not installed) and joined the clients to the new domain. Everything went ok and we haven't experienced any problems apart from the one mentioned in my first post and a rare crash of the print spooler service (very rare) which is solved by restarting the service.

All the clients are windows 2000 professional with sp4. The server is the domain controller and it has installed isa server and sql server. It has an Intel Xeon 2.4, 512 MB and 3 ultra scsi 360 hard disks of 36.2 GB each. OS
is installed on the first disk. On the second disk there are the user folders and the cache for the isa server.
Also installed on the server is Norton antivirus corporate edition 7.6 and Veritas 9.

I have search a lot through microsoft knowledge base but I haven't found anything describing this problem exactly. I have been told it's a SMB problem and I installed network monitor but I will have a chance to check network traffic on Monday.

Has anyone experienced such a problem and how did you solve it? I am looking all over for more than a week and I haven't found anything. Please help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like a licensing problem. SBS has a limit of users and maybe you've crossed it. 50 is the max, but I think you can buy the package with smaller amounts of users.

"In space, nobody can hear you click..."

We have got 30 licences and for the time being I have created 29 accounts. 5 more licences are on the way hopefully next weel will be installed.

HI.

> The server is the domain controller and it has installed isa server and sql server.
This is unrelated to your question, but using the same machine as both Firewall and other services is not a good idea, for relibility, security and performance issues that are expected.
I suggest installing another firewall and then disabling ISA on the SBS server.

Now to your problem:

> Also installed on the server is Norton antivirus corporate edition 7.6 and Veritas 9
NAVCE 7.6 is mentioned in the following article:
Read that article for other tips and related links.

> I have been told it's a SMB problem
I also think that it could be related.

* You can try disabling SMB signing on the network (server only or server+workstations).
This can be done using GPO.

* You can try also disabling Opportunistic Locking to see if it changes anything:
Configuring Opportunistic Locking in Windows:

Anyway - all workstations should be updated with latest SP for OFFICE.

You are quite right, isa server should not be installed on the same machine for the reasons you mention but as you know Small Buisiness Server does not allow you to install isa server on a different machine. Isa server really pushes the server but unfortunately for the time being I have no other option. I hope that there is a chance to convince them to buy a Cisco firewall but it's not going to happen soon.
I will try disabling SMB signing and see what happens. I have updated most workstations with the latest SP but nothing has changed so far.
Thanks for your help

yizhar I want to thank you. Your post was very helpful. SMB signing off seems to be the solution to my problem. No client had problem saving office documents in a network share. I will watch closely the behavior of the clients the next few days, but I feel that the workaround works.
Thanks again for your great post.
