Hello folks,
Hope someone can help get out of this sticky one!
Win2K Pro on a workgroup setup, all service packs including 4 + all patches patched up.
When I try to defrag mmc crashes with error: "MMC has generated errors and will closed by windows bla-bla-bla...".
Checking around I found that under Computer Management, Storage, the folder which is normally named 'Disk Management' only has a little grey box where the name is supposed to be. When I click on it, nothing displays under Volume-layout- type file system at the top section, though the bottom section shows the drives but incompletely - no volume size, file system, healthy thingy.
Also there are no other entries beneath Storage when expanded (disk defragmenter, logical drives).
When I right-click on Storage or the Disk Management to try and see if I can add the missing items, mmc.exe crashes and Computer management quits. Same happens when I select Storage and click on Action.
Can't add snap-ins or change a thing here.
Anybody knows what's up? How do I get around this?
Everything else works fine apparently, except can't defrag. Yep, no bugs either.
Thanks for any help!

Do you get same result if you run diskmgmt.msc? Or run mmc and load (add) the disk management snap-in?

Anything in event viewer?

Can you run chkdsk?

Could try running sfc /scannow.

Last resort - repair reinstall? (boot from 2k install CD, choose new (not repair) install. It should find installation and offer repair. Leaves data, settings, apps intact, loses windows settings.

(btw - any history on this problem - ie, did it just appear, after nothing changed, crahsed etc, or...)

Thanks Wolluf for replying,
I did not try diskmgmt.msc so I can't say. I've however done sfc /scannow without improvement.
When I run mmc and try to add snap-ins, mmc quits.
Chkdsk will run on reboot ok.
I could not make too much sense of the data in event viewer in relation to the incident. I do have a copy of Dr Watson's log if you could make sense of it. Rather long doc though.
Don't know the history of the machine whether it ever performed a defrag or not. One thing though is that I had trouble when updating AVG or Spybot on it, when although d/loads of the definitions were successful, the currency status was not changed, until I figured out the clock's calendar was set in 2001. Corrected that and all updates were OK.
The thing is that the items under Storage are missing (or as it appears, greyed out and inaccessible).

Is the Logical Disk Manager service running?

Otherwise, can only suggest the repair reinstall I mentioned earlier (I can't make sense of Dr Watson reports either!)

Yes, Logical Disk Manager services are running.
The interesting thing is that the Defragmenter option is not available under Storage. Also that MMC crashes when I right-click on Storage or try to add any snap-ins.
