I have recently upgraded my win 98 machine to XP and can no longer get a dial tone through my modem. Before I upgraded I had a V.90 K56Flex HSP PCI modem installed and it worked fine. After upgrading, XP installed the drivers for a HSP56 Micromodem. The modem responds when I query it as follows:
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - HSP DATA/FAX MODEM
AT+FCLASS=? - 0,1
AT#CLS=? - 0,1
AT+GCI? - +GCI:B4
AT+GCI=? - +GCI:(B5,3D,04,59,A5,B4,00,09,A0,FF,9C,61,A6,82,7B,0F,20,57,8B,8A,51,3C,31,0A,9F,FE,26)
ATI1 - A97/C02
ATI2 - OK
ATI3 - PCtel HSP56 MicroModem 8.00-9K
ATI4 - PCtel HSP56 MicroModem Data/Fax
ATI5 - V.90
ATI6 - XP.03.01
ATI7 - P0011.02/A2030.02

But when I try and connect I get a no-dial tone error. I have tried it on different phone lines and with different cables but still no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas as its driving me insane.

Cheers

I'm assuming you ran the compatibility checker that comes with XP and it told you your modem was ok?

Try going to the website (use another connection) of the manufacturer of the modem to get new drivers.

I dont know if this is relevant but if you are in the UK and have BT 1571 or similar modems will not dial when there is a broken dial tone (i.e. have a message)

When I installed XP it didn't say anything about the modem. I have downloaded many different drivers but it always reverts back to the ones that Xp installed.
I have also tried it on an NTL (cable) and BT connection.
Still no joy!!!

As a work around try going to Control Panel, Modems. Select your modem and click on Properties and under the Modem tab uncheck "Wait for dial tone before dialling". This has worked for me in the past with modems that could not detect the dial tone because of poor quality lines or hardware bugs in the modem itself. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Ive tried that one to. It just takes ages before I get the no-dial tone error.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

I say

1) Turning off waiting for dailtone is abit like getting a splinter in your finger and to solve it cutting your hand off. It solves one problem but can create bigger ones - really you need to find out why its doing this.

2) I remember someone having this problem a while ago. The modem was using the same drivers too (both in 98 and XP) and we descided in the end that the modem wasnt compatable and brought a new one. We didnt think the modem was compatable being a cheap win-modem from about 2 yrs ago.

Well i hope this helps, well if nothing else your not alone and if you need a new modem you can get an internal, hardware modem from dabs (or anywhere descent online) for about £17 which does work with XP

Cheers

I dont know if I can change the modem. the machine in question is a advent 7361 laptop and iv'e got a feeling that the modem is built in to the motherboard. Could I buy an external modem and disable the internal one?

If you brought an external one i dont think you would need to disable the internal one... just dont use it!!

Cheers for all your help. I'm gonna give in and buy a new modem.

I am having the EXACT same problem!

I have the Advent 7365 Laptop and have just put XP on it.

Do you know who the modem is made by? I can't find it in any paperwork, and I really don't want to take it apart. However I would like to get the latest drivers from the manufacturer.

I am really getting annoyed.

Thanks for any help offered,

Adam

I think it's a pctel modem. Ive been to their website and downloaded the xp drivers but they didn't work.

I think you would be better buying an external modem. Thats what i'm gonna do. I've been messing about with it for weeks and ive had enough.
