I was working on a customers computer today . got it printing on the network printer files shared to another computer as I was asked to do

winxp home

I shut it off by selecting turn off the computer tried to power back up and I get a red COMPAQ screen saying on the bottom f1 to enter setup f10 to restore

neither one does anything .

Bad HD ?

I cant see how anything I did could have caused it . now convincing him will be a little diffrent .

any other ideas ?

See if it starts in Safe mode by pressing F8 during startup, and selecting Sfae mode from the menu.
If it does, then select 'Last known good configuration' from the same menu.

If it does not start in Safe mode and you have the Windows XP CD, then try a repair install. To do this, then CD-ROM drive must be listed ahead of the HD as a boot device in BIOS.
If no luck, then the HD may be bad. You can check it with the HD manuf's diagnostics by installing it as a Slave drive in another system.

very weird I had tried both f8 and f9 and nothing .

she called this morning and he is having a minor network issue so obviosly its back up

See if another KB works.
If not, then reset CMOS either with a MB jumper(see computer's documentation), or by removing the CMOS battery for 30 minutes.
If no luck, then replace the CMOS battery.
If no good, then the MB may be bad.

Try Ski's idea, and if no joy you could also look at the PSU as a possible culprit.
