I have a windows XP Pro box with ADSL. Auto Dial is checked in the advanced menu in network conections, but when the machine boots up it fails to do the auto connect. Any ideas?
The auto-dial feature you are talking about is only used for making automatic connections to the internet when a program tries to access something on the intenet. This isn't what you want to do, you want a connection to auto-connect to the internet when starting windows. Here's how you do it.
Go into the properties for your DSL connection in Network Connections. Click on the Options tab, and uncheck "Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc" and "Prompt for phone number" (I'm looking at my dialup connection, so I'm not sure if that's the way it's worded on your DSL connection). You may also want to uncheck "Display progress when connecting", which means your dsl connection will be connecting 'in the background' without any prompt.
Now that you have that done, right-click on the DSL connection in Network Connections, select create a shortcut, and hit yes on the error message. Once it's on the desktop, drag it into your startup folder, and viola, automatic auto-connect to DSL when you log into that user.
