NIC configuration problem

I have an Allied Telesyn 2500 NIC for my Gigabyte motherboard with AMD Athlon 1500+ running Windows XP.

If I remove the NIC before deleting the connection and then replace the NIC, the original connection is no longer accessible and hence cannot be deleted. However, I can ping the P.C. on the IP address associated with the original connection, and the new connection is not allowed to use that IP address. Repeating the sequence hence results in multiple IP addresses. Connections can only be partially deleted via the registry.

Additionally, the bios is detecting valid IRQ's (e.g. 11) but XP is identifying the NIC as being on IRQ 18, 19 etc. This is the case even when connections have been deleted as far as possible via the registry.

Furthermore, configuring the p.c. to automatically assign IP addresses results in strange choices i.e. 169.254.211.205

The above problems do not appear to be unique to this particular make of NIC (I tried it with another one too)

Any suggestions, other than re-installing the OS and trying again?

Uninstall all listings of the NIC in Device Manager. The connections should take care of themselves.

I use the terms 'connection' and 'listing in device manager' synonomously. Once the NIC has been removed, there is no listing for it in the device manager. Replacing the NIC does not cause the NIC to be reassociated with the listing or reinstate the listing.
