Newbie to Java software programming

Hello all!

I have good background in JAVA programming based on my college courses and would like to branch out to stand-alone JAVA software programs. Can anyone point me towards any tutorials, books, etc. that would give me pointers on how to develop JAVA software? Questions like the best way in saving non-volatile information (via a file or small, internal database?) and other stuff like that. Any help is appreciated =)

This book has earned many accolades, including "best" by editors and readers of JavaWorld. Readers seem to be especially impressed with how well it is written. It is a general book, but it is not for novice programmers. I found it to be excellent, even though I "new a lot of that stuff". The author presents the material in such a way that you understand it better than you did before.
