I have a server that has SBS 2003 SP1 and Exchange 2003 configured. Exchange isn't used and never has been. Going through the process of installing a new server and want to keep the name of the server, but don;t want the exchange server to reflect the server name. Ex Servername is server.myserver.local and I want the exchange server to recieve mail on x@email.com. Is this possible? The other very newbie question is how does the exchange server get the email to it from the internet?

Just run the Internet and Mail Connect Wizard, and it will configure the mail to accept the right email domain. Don't worry about the name of your internal domain: that's separate from the domain that you can get mail to.

Once you've done that, you'll need to get mail to your server. Make sure you have an MX record out on the internet DNS system that points to an A-record that points to your server's public IP address.

I'd recommend going to a local Borders bookstore and sitting down and reading a chapter out of one of the books on SBS about SMTP mail delivery. I'm sure there will be a good 5-page introduction to the topic that will set you on your way.

If I currently don't use an email address such as email@company.com yet, how do I get this MX record setup, just call my ISP (cable company) and they will be able to add whatever name I tell them? Do I have to have a website registered before I have an email address setup?

You will want to register a domain name and then configure the DNS servers that the name registrar provides for you. You might want to find a professional to help you who can make all this happen efficiently. Seems like there's a real learning curve ahead of you.
