Is the only way to access a switch (Catalysts 3550) via the console? I mean I can't use TCP/IP (hyperterm, telnet, etc)to gain access to a switch, right?

You can use the console, once you configure it of you can then telnet to it . Also most of cisco's switches also have a http interface (browser) that you can use to configure the switches , most admins avoid this route as it is just faster thru the CLI to do the config.
 
So I *can* configure an IP address (private of course) on a switch?
 
You need to create a management interface on the 3550 and then enable access via the remote mechanism you prefer (e.g. telnet).
