It should be possible. Just use UNC format for the file names like \\servername\sharename\filename.XXX ...

I get the following when specifing the unc to the server
BackupDiskFile:
penMedia Backup device "server1\backup$\oran.dmp' failed to open. Operating system error = 5
The account I am using has access to this share and file and the sql service accout has also. what am i missing
I have tried technet for this error to no avail any assistance greatly received.
