we are trying to set up a test network using switch clustering. the network consisting of a 3550-12t switch as the master with port 1 going to the rest of our network, port 2 connected to a 2950t-24

my problem is that when we try to add a 2950t-12 to this setup (any cabling config gives same result) it shows it as an Unknown device in CMS, but has the appropriate info on its properties tab, yet it seems to have connectivity and work fine

It will work fine (as a switch) if the rest of the config is OK.
Clustering in cisco appears to be for management purposes only. If you configure you second device with an ip address you will be able to manage it individually.

The other thing is to check your IOS versions, as a rule the commander should be at the latest revision of any software. But check on cco as there may be other bug.
