New window always opens small

I am using windows xp pro. When I open something on the desktop it always opens in a small window and then I have to click the middle icon (btwn the _ and X) to enlarge it. Is there anything that I can do to always open a large window?

With no others arleady open.... Open the problem window, drag the corners to a size you like, close the window & it should stay.

... alternatively, right-click the shortcut and select 'properties', then change the 'run' option from 'normal window' to 'maximised'.
