We recently upgraded our Windows NT4 server to Windows 2000 server. The installation seemed to go very smoothly, until I tried to add a new Win2K machine to the domain. All computers that belong to the domain before the upgrade were still part of the domain, but when trying to add a new Win2k machine, I get the error:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "flaftmss":
The network path was not found."

This is the correct domain name; I have DHCP enabled.

My server also shows this error in the event log:
"Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed becasue no DNS servers are available." This is also a new error since the upgrade.

Are you running Active Directory,DNS?
Tell me more of your topology,
Cheers

Check to see if DNS is running and if DNS configuration on the new server is properly configured.Just for curiosity sake did you configure the new server with a static IP address?.If not it could be part of the problem.

Yes, we are running AD and DNS. I believe that DNS is configured correctly, but at this point I am getting so frustrated that I might overlook something? Yes, the server has a static IP. The DHCP is running on our firebox.

I was also having trouble adding WinNT machines to the domain, but found that the option for Pre-Windows 2000 users was unchecked. Once I enabled that, I have been able to add NT boxes.

The problem has been resolved with a rather odd work-around. I had the computer join a workgroup with the same name as the domain, and rebooted the computer. Then I went back into the network identification, and told it to join the domain. The computer joined the domain with no further difficulties!
