I have a question. I am a Crystal Report writer that has been promoted. My new duties will include db admin. I have very limited stored proc experience. I need to know what is the best book I can use as a starting point to get knowledge on the world of administration? I know I will need more than 1 book, but this will be my point A. Then can you outline point B, and maybe point C? I realize I am talking of a long learning process, but I need to know where I am going. Thank you for your assistance!

As it happens we have a list of books.

Useful Reference Books for SQL Server Professionals faq183-3324

Let me suggest some topics you need to learn about if you are new to db admin: Setting permissions including the use of roles, backup and restore including creating a disater recovery plan, SQL Server agent and the creation and running of jobs, stored procedure creation, indexing, performance tuning.

Welcome to our world and enjoy learning. Reading the threads on this board will help a lot. I'd also read the FAQs.

Thank you so much! Also, thanks for being quick at answering! I really appreciate your help!

I'd also recommend Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Bible by Paul Nielsen.

I refer to it quite often and find it to be a great quick reference. It might not go particularly deep into any one subject, but I like the author's style.

HTH,
John

John,
Thank you for responding with a book choice. I am thrilled to be given this chance, but boy, what an undertaking!!! Going from a Crystal report writer to a DBA is a HUGE switch. Thanks again!
