i need help setting up a server on a linux machine, redhat 9. kde desktop, no idea what to do totally new to linux any help would be greatly apreciated.
Which server? In most cases you'll need to make sure the pc you will be using for the server has a static ip. If it is on a local network, you will need to forward all requests for a particular server to that pc's ip. This is usually done from the router. You will need to modify your dns records to point to your public ip address. If this is a dynamic ip, you will need to use a pointer service such as noip, dyndns or dns2go. I'm assuming you already have a registered domain name. If not you can get one for about $8.00 a year at godaddy.com. Now you're ready to setup your servers. Depending on which one(s) you want, you can start at their respective websites.
There are other servers you could use instead of these but these are the ones that come installed with most distros of linux. Their docs should give you a good start. If you have a specific question, then we will be able to help you more effectively.
