New to exchange with wuestions.... 2

I am looking to install exchange server. I have a few questions maybe someone can answer. Bare with me now, I am new to exchange.

- Can I install exchange on the same machine my website is hosted on or even the machine that is hosting AD, or should it be installed on a machine by its self?
- In order for exchange to work with active directory does my AD name need to be a public name like abc123.com or can it work with abc123.local?
- Do I need user cals for both windows 2003 server and exchange server or do I just need server cals for both servers and user cals for exchange?
- Is outlook web access built into exchange 2003 standard or do I have to purchase that separate?

1. I'd recommend it be on its own machine for a bunch of reasons, but technically, it will work on the machines you mention.

2. It doesn't matter.

3. Yes. You need CALs for Exchange, and they are separate from the Windows Server CALs.

4. Built in, as is Outlook Mobile Access.

So I need user cals for Windows 2003 Server and Exchange Server. So Say 100 user cals 2003 server and 100 user cals for exchange?

You should try to avoid installing Exchange on a DC. This configuration is not supported by Microsoft. (unless it is on SBS).

Just to add to 58sniper's comment, Server Active Sync and the use of Outlook over HTTP are also included free with Exchange.

You should also be made aware that when you buy your Exchange CALs, they INCLUDE a free Outlook 2003 CAL. So you can legally upgrade all users you buy an Exchange CAL for to Outlook 2003.

I did not comment on that as I agree with 58Snipers response. You need CALs for both Server and Exchange.

When you purchase Exchange, make certain you are ordering through a Volume License provider and not ordering from someone like Buy.com. A retail outfit will provide you with retail media for the Outlook and you will not be able to automate the deployment like you can with a volume license version.

I have an FAQ on deploying Office in the Windows 2000 forum. The same steps for that can be used for just Outlook, so no need to go around to 100 PCs. You can have them install automatically!
