New to DNS - need help with forwarder?

Hello-

I have a W2k Advanced server setup as the domain controller and the DNS server for local clients. I have them pointing to the local server for DNS. However, I can not get the "forward" to the ISP dns to work.
The users are surfing the internet fine, but can't resolve local names, which the ISP dns server was able to do. I went into the properties of the local dns server and clicked on the forward tab, and input the ip of the isp dns server. But it still isn't resolving these local names. Is there some other way to get these names resolved?

Are you sure the clients are using the correct DNS server?

Yes, they are using using dhcp which assigns them the local dns server.

This sounds weird! If the forewarder was not working you would have internet DNS resolution. Did you check the event veiwer for netlogon problems with DNS? It is true the clients need to be pointed to your server for dns, not to the ISP dns. I have a feeling your DNS is probably ok. I am going to take a guess a say you have the workstation DNS pointed to the ISP DNS and not the server. If this is not the case, and your sure. My second guess would be your workstations or clients are not win2000 or xp boxes. They are win 9.x or something. In this case you may need to install WINS on the server, to resolve Netbios names. Or you could always install IPX/SPX(netbios).

Well, my issue was solved by adding host entries into the dns server for the 3 local servers. Everyone is getting everywhere else on the net fine.

You could also have a problem if the servers were not properly self-registering in the dynamic DNS. Since there would be no DNS entry on the internal DNS server in this case.
