Had to rebuild our Border Manager server, at some point in the proceedings it asked if I wanted to overwrite the server of the same name in the tree (I thought I had got rid of it) anyway I answered yes and all went ok as far as I could see. Now when i browse the NDS some of the objects are question marks see below:
Server shows as valid and it has a rw replica, however I have:
? 0_3
? admin_beasvr3
? beasvr3_data
? beasvr3_data_pool
? beasvr3_sys
? beasvr3_sys_pool
I haven't even started configuring BM yet, need help !!!

Thanks

DSrepair is your friend. Run it from the server console, select 'unattended full repair', ans see what errors it shows.

Lawnboy I have tried to create the volume objects that belong to the new server (this object shows ok), but I get the error 0:0x8884, i have looked this up and it applies only to logging in with clients as far as I can see. I have done a DSrepair also and still have these objects. I notice that the server I have the problems with has a different version of NDS on it. It's a netware 6 server and the other is a nw5, should the version be the same? If so do I use nwconfig to unload DS? Thanks for your patience and help.

Put keyboard down, call Novell.

You have inconsistent replicas and it is very easy to make your problem worse or cause catastrophic damage if you don't fully understand what you are doing.

If you do want to tackle it on your own, look up "HEALTH CHECK" and then resolve any errors before you try to proceed. I am betting 100% that you will find some errors in the process that are causing the symptoms you describe. I have a "quick" health check outlined on my website at about half way down the page. Most major problems will show up with the steps outlined.

The different versions of Netware shouldn't be a problem, but you should at least have the latest DS for your particular version. I wouldn't worry about that though until you get your other problems resolved.

I'll have to defer to Marvin's advice here. Weren't you also having policy overwrite problems with clients? The suggestions on Marvin's site should at least give you some clues where the problem is. A call to Novell isn't that expensive, and even the best Admins need help sometimes.

Unloading DS is a very dangerous thing to do. If Dsrepair isn't showing errors then NDS is at least functional. You can poke around in NDS using DStrace (see TID10011026 and TID10011027) but I warn you, the water is deep and cold.

Thanks for all advice and help, I will do as you all advise. Yes I did have trouble with policies but not in this campus
