So, I have this Exchange 2003 server up and running and receiving/sending e-mail for domain companyA.com. As I discussed in a previous posting, CompanyA acquired CompanyB along with their Exchange server and their e-mail domain companyB.com. I ended up having to set up the server and Exchange from scratch.
Now, there are about half a dozen users from CompanyB that still need their old companyB.com e-mail address. We have a Barracuda spam filter so I added the domain to the configuration. I then manually added the companyB.com address to each of those user's profiles under Exchange E-Mail addresses. However mail from outside doesn't come through to those addresses. After talking to Barracuda and figuring out that it wasn't the spam filter, I checked this forum and realized that I had to create/modify a recipient policy to contain the @companyB.com domain. So I added that to the default policy. However it still won't work, I keep getting a 550 "unable to relay" message.
I have updated the MX record for companyB.com to point to the hostname mail.companyA.com which in turn points to the public IP of the mail server. What else do I need to do? Is there a simpler way to update the recipient policy for just the 6 or so users that need the old address? Their new companyA.com address should still be the default.
Please help!
