Has any one had an issue with the new MGC cards

Am running a CS1000E, Rlse 5.5. The old MGC cards work fine but the new cards (have got 2) after the initial CLI configuration and loadware upgrade fail to work properly. The symptom is the inability to access the MGC via CLI. You cannot get to a command prompt- either LDB or OAM. The card registers etc but is basically useless. I have no "security" per say turned on. I can logg into the card but I cannot get to a command prompt. Only the Nortel warning screen is displayed and nothing else- no board particulars or prompt.

It looks to me that the loadware being used to upgrade the board is causing an issue with the new boards.

New card P/N is NTDW98AAE5
All my other cards are NTDW60BBE5

As always any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We have had a couple of these cards and had no problems may be load ware related we are using:

DSP1AB03.LW
DSP2AB03.LW
MGCAAA08.LW
MGCBAP01.LW
MGCCAP02.LW
MGCFAA16.LW
MGCMAB01.LW

Or double check that the info in element manager for the MGC is correct ELAN/TLAN/SUBNETS/GATEWAYS/CALL Server (At bottom), then reboot MGC do a control I when prompted and do an mgcIPClear and formatDisk, reboot -1 and once it reloads from the Gold Image put the IP details in again.

Often had it where there is a mistake in the Element manager but it is correct in LD 97 so the MGC registers and upgrades but also downloads the xml file created by the details in element magager which are wrong and the MGC doesn't work after the reboot.

The lesson in the above is that - generally speaking - you always want to be running the latest loadware/firmware/software on everything in your system as well as latest set of PEPS (patches). Updates are released to fix problems so the odds are good that if you are seeing a problem that it is already fixed. That is why Avaya/Nortel tech support teams will insist on updating/patching a system before they do any assessment if you call them with a problem.

Hi bignose21

Was trying to do a serviceability test prior to installing an additional chassis at one of our nodes. On the shop test bed all I did is keep the same parameters in EM as was the previous MGC card (old style)and put the new card in the MGC slot. Using port 0 from the MGC card I entered the initial IP info for the ELan.(Used same IP Info) It took the initial configuration from the Gold Image. After it went through the firmware upgrade (set to auto) is when things go south. I can't break into the boot up screen-Control I, no matter what I do. Any command such as mgcsetup etc. is not obtainable. I think the firmware is the issue. Not sure how I can get into the card (x2) at this point.

This is from Nortel knowledge base:

CS 1000E 5.5: Unable to access Media Gateway Card (MGC) shells on new cards
Problem Description:
On brand new cards out of the box, following an upgrade to the current loadware on the Call Server (CS) the Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) and Local Debug Mode (LDB) shells are not accessible. After connecting to the cards getting the login prompt and password prompt, then the banner scrolls and that is it. Unable to get to the OAM prompt or LDB prompt. This issue is only seen on brand new cards.

Symptoms

*
No prompts
*
Cannot manage card
*
No output to Teletypewriter (TTY)

Problem Resolution
Manual workaround:

1. Telnet into the MGC which you will not be be to access properly.

2. Go to LDB level (Ctrl + L, D, B).

3. Type in "remove /p/cspversion.txt" and hit the RETURN key.
To verify it:
ftp <MGC IP address>
cd /p
Ensure cspversion.txt gets deleted otherwise repeat step 3.
(You cannot see anything echo on this hosted screen)

4. Repeat step 1, you can login into this MGC normally.
There is no need to reboot the MGC.

You were right on the money !

Have asked my vendor for the latest loadware and PEPS anyway but the solution provided was spot on.

Thanks to all !!!
