New MB (gigabyte GA-965GM-S2), new HDD (Western digital 160 GB SATA drive), I am trying to format the HDD and install windows XP. I thought I could just turn the computer on with the windows XP CD in the drive and it would boot.

It goes thru POST fine, then it says BOOT FROM CD-DVD drive. Then it goes no further.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You are correct.
Is the rom set in the boot sequence?
Have you tried another XP CD?
Have you tried another rom drive?
Another IDE/SATA cable?
You need to "press any key" to boot from XP

The CD is in the boot sequence...
I assume there is some sort of driver for the CD drive in the BIOS?

Also I couldn't find anything in the BIOS for drive letter designations; is it possible that the MB is not recognizing the drive where it is supposed to be?

I checked the CD on another computer and it works fine.

I will try another cable.

Here is the MB info.

Thanks in advance for any help!

truop,

Does the BIOS detect the hard drive and the CD-0ROM drive? Enter setup and have a look if it passes by too fast. You should be able to see both.

I personally have never seen an "any" key [smile]

Bios does recognize the CD drive. Is it possible the drive is bad?

Sometimes a CDrom just won't find the boot file on an XP disk but works properly once into Windows.
That is why it is advisable to swap the drive to be sure.
Definately try another XP disk, same goes for the IDE cable.

Does BIOS also see the hard drive? CD-ROM failure is always a possibility. Also, check the jumpers on the CD-ROM to make sure it is set to Master if it is the only device on the cable, as it should be.

I switched to another IDE cable, still no response.

The BIOS does see the hard drive.

Also I went thru the 6 Windows set-up floppies to the point where it says load the Windows CD. I load the CD, it starts to spin (not constant); but it nothing further shows up on the screen

The drive jumper is set to CS(CSEL): "the MASTER/SLAVE setting will be made automatically, depending on the hardware configuration."...maybe this isn't compatible with the MB; I will change the jumper to MASTER and try again.

Optical drives are usually best set specifically to master or slave. If that doesn't solve your problem, reckon martin's swap the drive is best advice.

with boot order floppy, CD, HD
turn on the computer
bios completes
press any key to boot from CD
then this error message:
INF file is corrup or missing status 32768 set-up cannot continue

... then I try the e-machines recovery CD I have-

turn on the computer
bios completes
press any key to boot from CD
no drives found aborting installation
starting Windows millenium emergency boot; then I get the choice of restore or go to DOS prompt.

If I choose restore-

Windows XP restore complete
The hard disk contents have been restored (this takes about 2 seconds to get this message, and it can't be true because there is notheing on the HD)

error! current drive is not the CD Rom drive
select CD Rom to open door and press any kety to continue

general error reading drive A:

If I choose Dos prompt-

A:

then I check directory, and it is the volume on the CD drive....

I think maybe it is the problem if my CD drive is showing up as drive A:?

any other suggestions to get Windows loaded??

Thanks again!
