Hello everyone,
Perhaps not the most appropriate forum but I am sure that you have ran into this issue while supporting outlook.

As per: new mail notificaiton fails due FW and udp packets....

Has any one found a permanent solution that doesn't involve hacking registry? Shouldn't there be a easier way to deploy outlook?
It is just nuisance to remember to hack each new XP machine as they do come with SP2. Permanent gift from M$?

Any thoughts you would like to share are apprechiated.
Thanks for your time!
All the best!

Yes - don't use the Windows Firewall ...

Turning off the Windows Firewall doesn't solve this.

The only way I know to resolve this is the registry change...

... or upgrading to Outlook 2003.

nice try strongm but we are talking M$...it would be too logical :).
tony72000, are you sure there are no issues?I would hate to upgrade (read budgets) and find myself in the same spot.
From the article:
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
• Microsoft Outlook 2002 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Outlook 2000 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Outlook 98 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Outlook 97 Standard Edition

I am also in the process of upgrading e2k ->2k3 and from what I understand 'client' (outlook 2003) is free?!
What version of outlook can I legally distrubute?
Many thanks for your time!
All the best!

If you own Exchange 2003 CALs, you can install Outlook 2003 to that client.

There is an exception you need in the firewall to get new notifications - services.exe I think but I can't recall for sure.

This was my experience with this particular problem:

Our firewall policy is set us that when the users are connected to the domain, the firewall is automaticaly turned off. When the users have disconnected from the domain, it turns on.

After installing SP2, all users of Outlook 2k and XP where reporting this problem. But not 2k3. The reg fix (Installed using a batch file) solved the problem.

There was a reason why 2k3 was unaffected, but I can't remember why. Will try and find out and let you know.

Hi Zelandakh and tony7200,
Thanks guys for sharing your notes and I apprechiate the follow up!
I like the idea of fw drop on station level...if FW in XP is good for anything then that would be blocking of the products and services by its own maker.
Thanks again!
All the best!
