Got a new system with Intel P4 930, GA 8I945P-G-RH motherboard, 200 Gb Seagate IDE HD, and 2Gb ram.

Installing Win XP from CD, it loads all the preliminary files into ram OK, but when it tries to start windows, I get a blue screen error 7B.

BIOS sees the hd OK, and using SIW via the UBCD CD, it sees the hd as well. Have tried with a 80Gb hd - same result.

Am at a loss what to do here - send it back maybe? Faulty MB? Some setting I have overlooked?

Appreciate any comments.

Cheers,
Brodie

Try with just one stick of ram.

Same thing with either module installed.

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

In the BIOS Setup try to disable the FLOPPY (and disable the Drive Swapping option) and disable the BOOT VIRUS checking (also set SMART Monitoring to NO/Disabled)...

What IDE connector on the motherboard are you using? From the manual, I see there are three. Two of them (IDE2 and IDE3) are connected to a RAID controller. If you are using either of these two, you will most likely have to load a driver during the early stages of XP's install.

Freestone, you're on to something there. The HD is in IDE1 and the DVD RW was in IDE 2. I made the DVD a slave on IDE 1 and now everything is working fine.

This sort of confirms what I was seeing right from the start. As the install process loaded files into ram and then when it tried to access the hd for the first time, it hit me with a 7b error. Why there is a problem using 2 ide ports, I don't know. Anyway, it is all installed OK now.

Now I have another problem. When I got it to go, the cable setup was IDE > long > HD > short > DVD. When re-assembling the pc, I had to reverse the 80 wire cable so it would all fit, ( IDE > short > HD > long > DVD) and now it hangs at the checking for ide ports step on start-up, unless I unplug the DVD. And, yes I double checked the pin orientation.

Any clues why that may be happening?

Brodie

EDIT: cable problem solved - use cable select both devices.
