Need to replace hardware for our main domain controller, is there a step by step procedure to do this? It's a server 2003 R2. Has raid etc.

Frank,

Really a question better for the Windows 2003 Server forum and not the Exchange 2003 one. In a nutshell though:

(1) If this is your first Windows 2003 R2 domain controller, upgrade the schema of your AD Forest to version 31 using ADPrep on the R2 CD. (adprep /forestprep). If you have Windows 2003 domain controllers this is still a necessary step.

(2) Promote your new server to a DC. If you're going to decommission the old DC afterwards you need to move all the FSMO roles which it has to the new one. Check the Win 2k3 forums as there have been a lot of links posted.

(3) Move any other services necessary to the new one and maek sure you're testing as you go!

(4) Run DCPROMO on the old DC to remove the domain controller role.

.......like I said..in a nut shell, check the Windows 2003 Forum for more advice and a lot of other discussion on the topic
