New DVD burner not being found by Win2K hardware install 2

I just bought/installed a CD/DVD burner, but Win2K is not finding it as new hardware. I went into Control Panel and did the hardware install with no luck. I did get the burn software installed.

With my original CD player in the PC, there are three lines to it: 1) electricity 2) the plug with all the pins and 3) a smaller plug with three wires, red, black and white.

For the new burner, my PC only has the electricity and the plug with the pins, not the smaller plug with the three wires. I asked someone at work and they said that the third plug is needed and I just need to get the proper cable, plug in to the DVD burner and then into the mother board. I followed the original 3-wire cable from the CD player to where it plugs into the board, but I did not find another receiving plug for the DVD player to plug into.

The DVD burner is getting power b/c it spins when a CD/DVD is put into it.

Thoughts?

the first one of course is power, the second cable is the ide cable the 3rd is the audio cable.

As for the device, what else is on this ide cable? IF you have a harddrive, set the hard drive as master and the dvd burner as slave. If 2 dvdroms or cd devices, set one as master and the other as slave.

Can you see the dvd when you go into the bios?
The flat "cable with the pins" i assume is the IDE cable...This is usualy grey or yellow and it is like thin wires stick together. The last of those thin wires is collored red. This red have to face the power cable.
Is that red part next to the "electricity" or is it on the other side?
By the way the "3) a smaller plug with three wires, red, black and white" is NOT needed. It is for digital sound cards. has nothing to do with the cd or dvd playing or recording.

Thanks for the info about the audio cable.

The first pin plug on the IDE cable is connected to a CD player and the 2nd pin plug goes to the new DVD burner.

How do I go about setting the master/slave? Which should be master, the CD from which the music plays?

Doesnt really matter but Id go ahead and set the dvd burner as master and cd as slave. In order to set them, on the back you will see a pins with a small rectangle piece over them. This is called a jumper. In the link below I have a pic of it. It its the one that has cs(cable select), sl(slave), ma(master) above it. Use that pin to set according to how I stated. Let us know your results.

Partially correct... on systems with ME, 98, 95 and NT it is needed for PLAYBACK... W2k and above do the playback over the IDE cable...

Also partially correct, some systems it does not matter, but on most it does... Always set the DVD-Burner as MASTER and any CD Drive as SLAVE... and as MASTER it should be at the end of the cable, usually BLACK Plug on the IDE cable, and the SLAVE on the Gray (middle) plug of the IDE cable...

I am using W2K.

It was easier for me to change the jumper on the burner, so I set it to slave. It appears to be working. What impact, positive or negative, does it have on performance or ease of operation with the slave/master selection?

BigBadBen gave you the best answer. Always set the burner as the master and the CD or DVD ROM drive to slave. You will have problems if you don't. Burners want to be the master.
