Kept a spare control unit on hand in case hardware failed. Had a hardware failure today. Swapped out the control unit. Put the old SD in. System now reads 'system unlicensed'. Any ideas?
Avaya wants the money for a license, since late 8.0 you can't just upgrade to the release that is current any more.
If you have a chassis that is running the virtual essential license then you need to buy one for a replacement chassis.
Avaya offers the service contracts to have replacement parts for free and in these cases they actually provide you with the license but short of that you have to buy it. We all do.

I have the licenses, and they are valid. This didn't occur due to an unlicensed upgrade. This is a replacement control unit that now has the original SD, all of the configuration and licenses loaded.
What licences? You specifically need an essential edition licence and if you have that then you don't have the upgrade licence required to run the current software as the system you used as a spare had been started at a previous release/wasn't brand new. No point looking for other answers, it is what we have told you
