Never Ending Backups

I've been having an intermittent problem where backups scheduled in SQL Server Agent are failing with no apparent errors - they appear in in SQL Server Agent as executing until I cancel them manually - the job history shows that they have been running for the whole time (hours and hours!)
Any ideas?
