I have a user using a laptop with Windows 98 on it. Before the splash screen comes up, he gets the message (in dos) "SMART Failure Predicted... Hard Disk = 0 Primary Master."

The user can press "OK" and then use the laptop with no problem.

Anyone ever seen this message before?

SMART stands for "Self Monitoring and Repair Technology", and some hard drives have it, some don't. If the BIOS is set to detect SMART, and the drive is incapable, you get the message.
Disable SMART in BIOS setup. Cheers,
Jim

I looked in the BIOS but didnt see anything that said SMART...

Could something else be causing this message.

No. There is usually a setting somewhere pertaining to SMART monitoring.
I have a feeling that SMART is automatic on that system, you can't turn it off, and it's telling you that the hard drive is going to fail, in other words, it's doing it's job. Cheers,
Jim
