I'm having a problem networking an XP machine with 2 '98 machines.

I have tried a number of different approaches to solving this problem but to no avail.

Is this a common problem? and is there an easy fix?
Do i need a patch for the Win'98 machines?

I know I'm not giving a lot of info about my problem, but I just want to amke sure it's not a common problem first..

Has anyone else had problems networking XP with 98??

TIA

This should not be a common problem.
Make sure all the IP addresses are in the same range and the machines are part of the same workgroup.
1.1.1.1
1.1.1.2
1.1.1.3
Etc are sample Ip addresses.
How are u joining the machines together?Hub, Router, direct connection? As this may be the problem.

First, an important quibble with kippy13's comment above:

"1.1.1.1
1.1.1.2
1.1.1.3
Etc are sample Ip addresses."

You cannot just arbitrarily create an IP network segment number scheme. Either use the default APIA IPs or conform to IANA RFC 1918:

Section 3: Private Address Space

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private networks:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

We will refer to the first block as "24-bit block", the second as "20-bit block", and the third as "16-bit" block". Note that the first block is nothing but a single class A network number, while the second block is a set of 16 continuous class B network numbers, and the third block is a set of 255 continuous class C network numbers.

** end quote **

Sorry, I know kippy13 was illustrating a point, but I wanted to make sure there was no confusion.

newphpbie's question is there any tricks or is the process of networking XP in a mixed-OS setting difficult? It is not on its face difficult, it is just that there are some well hidden settings that people often ignore that can make or break whether it works well.

Steve Winograd has written two excellent step-by-step guides, and if you pay attention to the details you will sort out your issues:

Simple files sharing - Enabled
No other choice under XP Home; set as the default for XP Pro and can be disabled:

Simple files sharing - Disabled
My preference for XP Pro.

Hi bcastner,
Thanks for pointing that out, it is an important point, however as u say I was only illustrating a point.
I have to highly recommend bcastners links, they are a great reference.
