What would be the best way to make my linux and XP machines on my home network be able to see each other so I can transfer files back and forth?

Enable the FTP server on the Linux box.

FTP is one way.
You could setup a SMB file system on the linux box that could be seen like a normal file share from the windows box.
If you have NFS you could also use that.
